Why any of this exists
I didn't start in management. I started as a network field tech. Then PC support. Then nine years in IT security — head down, fixing what was broken, certain that doing the work well was the job.
It wasn't. I learned that the year I crossed into executive management and saw the machinery from the other side: who gets seen, who gets written about, who's in the room when the decisions get made. I'd been technically excellent and organizationally invisible for a decade — and I'd called it humility.
Then it moved fast. Service Portfolio Manager — two pay grades in one jump. Director of Operations. Director of Infrastructure. Now Director of Digital Services. Same person. Different game.
I built this to settle a debt. Someone gave me a shot while I was still in school. I tried to thank him — he told me to pay it back. Years later, a mentor did it again, and called it paying it forward. I've carried both ever since. And now I carry it for my son, who's the reason I don't get to quit.
So here it is, from the inside, for every technical person still betting a career on being the best one in the room while someone louder walks off with the title. Two people pulled me through. Now I pay it forward — to you.
